Doctor in the House: Conversations About Your Illness

What does your doctor say to you when you enter the consultation room, or after delivering the news of your diagnosis? How does the nurse communicate when preparing you for a medical test, such as an MRI scan? These conversations are important in our healthcare interactions, and can make a difference in terms of what information we take away from the visit, how much we trust our healthcare provider, and how motivated we feel to make a positive change. Dr Ayeshah Syed, Deputy Dean of Research & Innovation, at the Faculty of Languages & Linguistics, University of Malaya, joins us in a conversation about why language and communication matters in healthcare interactions.
