According to the Ministry of Health, it was estimated that there would have been 51,000 patients with end-stage kidney disease on dialysis last year. Unchecked, the number could rise to 100,000 by the year 2040. However, dialysis isn’t the best treatment option for people with kidney failure – a kidney transplant is. Yet why are there so few kidney transplants in Malaysia, and what can we do to improve the rate of transplantation?
