The sight of children cycling on the streets, playing badminton over the gates or catching fish in the longkang is extremely rare in today’s urban neighbourhoods. More parents today are reluctant to let their children play outdoors, amid worries over their safety. We ask consultant developmental paediatrician Dr Rajini Sarvananthan whether this lack of outdoor play affects children’s development, and if outdoor play is necessarily the best for every child.
