Mind Matters: While Mum Takes Care Of Everyone, Who Takes Care Of Her?

We’re doing a great job of protecting mothers during pregnancy and childbirth. Maternal mortality - deaths due to pregnancy and childbirth - has reduced dramatically in Malaysia over the decades. However, what happens to their emotional well-being and mental health after childbirth? The months and years that follow are arguably even more stressful and difficult as they struggle to raise their children while juggling other domestic and professional responsibilities and expectations. Following the recent publication of the National Health & Morbidity Survey 2022 - Maternal & Child Health, we invite family medicine specialist Assoc Prof Dr Ezura Madiana and consultant clinical psychologist Dr Zubaidah Jamil on Mind Matters to discuss the silent struggles faced by mothers, and the determinants of maternal mental health.

This segment talks about self-harm and suicide, and may be a difficult topic for some listeners. If you need to talk about it, do look for local support within your community, or call helplines like Talian HEAL at 15555, MIASA's 24-hour helpline at 1800-1800-66 or Befrienders KL at 03 7627 2929.
