Public Health: Exploring Unconventional Health Financing Options

If you or your loved one needs substantial medical treatment, such as bypass surgery, cancer therapy or IVF treatment, you could be looking at medical bills that could range from tens of thousands of ringgit, or several hundred thousand, if you’re paying out-of-pocket. These conversations are becoming increasingly common in middle-income households, as they look for options beyond the crowded public healthcare system. We speak to two different health financing providers to find out the benefits and risks of these unconventional models, and whether they ultimately address the challenges of rising healthcare costs.
