A Foundation for Single Mothers

In the 10 year period from 2000 to 2010, the population of single mothers has increased from slightly over 120,000 to more than 800,000, representing 2.9% of the total population in Malaysia. This is a demographic which experiences the halving of their resources and doubling of their responsibilities, while also confronting a host of emotional, mental and social problems. A new organization founded in mid-2012 called Single Mothers International aims to improve the plight of single mothers by alleviating them out of poverty, remove the stigma attached to single parenthood, and empower them with entrepreneurial skills to lead an indenpendent and financially secure life. We speak to co-founder of Single Mothers International K.S. Vasan and a single mother, Saleiana Ramli.
