Creepy Tech, Automated Crops, Tesla To Rebuild Puerto Rico

On today’s edition of Enterprise Biz Bytes, @Richard Bradbury, @ Jeff Sandhu @Arvindh Yuveraj and @Majidah Hashim spoke about:

0:54.648 - A woman filmed her internet-connected camera whispering ‘Hola Señorita’

No, this is not an episode of Black Mirror. A couple of months ago, Rilana Hamer from the Netherlands bought a small internet-connected camera from a local convenience store. She wanted to use the device to keep an eye on her puppy while away from the house. But it wasn’t only the puppy that was being watched.

7:34.227 - Apple gave Uber’s app ‘unprecedented’ access to a secret backdoor that can record iPhone screens.

Although there is no evidence that Uber used this access to take advantage of the iPhone features, the revelation of the app’s access to privileged Apple code raises important questions for a company already under investigation in the US for a variety of controversial business practices.

12:41.598 - A startup is engineering crops that can fertilise themselves.

Nitrogen fertiliser created an agricultural boom that changed the course of history. But it takes a huge amount of energy to produce. What if the plants could just make it themselves?

19:36.592 - Your future clothes could be made of Methane.

There’s now a biotech startup that’s using methane-eating bacteria to create a fully biodegradable polymer. They’re called Mango Materials and they’re from San Francisco. The process involves feeding methane to bacteria, which then produce the polymer. Listen to find out more.

26:03.437 - Elon Musk says Tesla could rebuild Puerto Rico’s power grid with batteries and solar.

After Puerto Rico was hit by two hurricanes back to back in just a few weeks, most of their power grid was completely destroyed. Elon Musk and his company Tesla stepped up saying that they could entirely rebuild the power grid. Potentially changing the way energy is created and consumed on the Caribbean island forever.
