State of the Unions in Malaysia

Professor Dr. Nik Ahmad Kamal Bin Nik Mahmod, Professor of Law, International Islamic University Malaysia

State of the Unions in Malaysia

Workers at an Amazon warehouse in New York have voted to unionize, creating the first union of Amazon employees in the US. The Amazon Labor Union are seeking longer breaks, paid time off if they get injured, and an hourly wage of $30 compared to the $18 they currently receive. The formation of this union however comes as a huge blow to Amazon, which has aggressively fought against unionisation. We discuss the resurging interest in forming unions in recent years, as well as if the effects of this trend will soon be felt here in Malaysia.
