Why Open-Source AI Matters for Malaysia?

AI is moving fast, and China’s push for open-source models could shake up the industry. But is Malaysia ready for this shift? Do local AI startups have the funding, talent, and government support to compete? Or are we at risk of being left behind? We break down what’s working, what’s missing, and what needs to change. Most importantly, what will it take for Malaysia to be more than just a user of AI, but a real player in building it?

Joining us is Dr Lau Cher Han, CEO of LEAD, an academy that offers AI, data science, and full stack development programmes. LEAD is also a member of the Malaysia Artificial Intelligence Consortium (Konsortium AI Negara), a group working to grow Malaysia’s AI industry. He shares insights on where Malaysia stands, the challenges AI startups face, and what it will take to compete on the global stage.
