Child Abuse in Malaysia

Newspaper reports towards the end of 2014 right up to early 2015, showed a spike in child abuse cases as there was at least one news piece on the matter highlighted every month. From parents to maids and daycare centres, children were reportedly abused verbally, sexually or physically and some very sadly died due to their injuries. While we try to understand and dissect the type of parent or caretaker behind such acts, could the answer be in just the lack of awareness? In this interview with children’s rights NGO Suriana Welfare Society, we explored the level of child abuse awareness in our society.
