The Triumph And Tragedy Of Malaysia's Everest Mission

T Ravichandran, national climber

The Triumph And Tragedy Of Malaysia's Everest Mission

Mount Everest casts a long shadow both literally and figuratively, looming large in the public imagination. But Malaysia's recent mission was marked by both triumph (our countrymen making it to the summit) and tragedy (the death of Lieutenant-Colonel Awang Askandar Ampuan Yaacub, and Muhammad Hawari Hashim still missing at the time of our show). We speak to veteran mountaineer T Ravichandran, who is also freshly back from reaching the top of Everest, to understand what it truly feels like to climb to the peak, the allure of this mountain, and the dangers of this dream. And then after that, we open up our lines to talk about how many others share this dream of climbing Everest... and how many others, frankly, are the complete opposite.
