Top 5 at 5: What Housewives Go Through In Domestic Violence Cases

Latest reports show that over 2000 domestic violence cases were recorded nationwide between January and April this year, with housewives taking the brunt of them. We speak to Mangleswary Subramaniam, program manager of Women’s Empowerment and Leadership Division of the Penang Women’s Development Corporation for better insights into the realities behind the reports.

Other stories we covered:

• Feeding stray animals punishable by law?: Over the past couple of years, local councils have issued warnings and fines for feeding strays. Animal rights lawyer Rajesh Nagarajan believes that targeting stray feeders is unconstitutional and an abuse of power. We reached out to Rajesh to talk about the situation and what legal power local councils have in this case.

• Brain implant race: China has joined the United States in the race to develop a brain chip using Brain-Computer Interface technology (BCI). With both countries pouring significant funds and making waves with the project, we talk to consultant neurologist, Dr Vickneswaran Mathaneswaran about the significance of this technology.

• Blue-naped parrots in danger: The Tanjung Art Eco Development Project (TAED) seeks to take and develop more land for tourist-aimed attractions. Birdwatchers have raised concerns about the multiple bird species’ that will have their homes destroyed by this development plan. We talk to Ron Pudin, President of the Sabah Bird Watchers’ Association about how the blue-naped parrots will be affected and what can be done to help them.

• Japan facing overtourism: Ahead of the country's elections, topics such as immigration have become hot among the public. But with tourism both helping and hurting a country, where do we draw the line? We discuss this.
