Top 5 at 5: Getting Into Aeroline's Suspension

Aeroline's express bus services have been suspended for one month by the Land Transport Agency, or Apad. This comes after three show-cause letters were issued to its operator Zulco Sdn Bhd after the company was found picking up and dropping off passengers at unauthorised locations. Transportation experts noted that, while lawful, this issue exposes deeper flaws in our public transport policies. We sit down with Wan Agyl Wan Hassan, founder of MY Mobility Vision to unpack these flaws.

Other stories we covered:

• Landmark lawsuit for migrant workers: The Shah Alam High Court upheld a decision by the Labour Court to award 93 migrant workers over RM700,000 in unpaid wages after they were left stranded without jobs upon arriving in Malaysia in 2023. Human Resources Minister Steven Sim praised the two 'superhero' lawyers who took on the case pro bono for standing up for workers' rights. We speak to one of them, Sahain Nada Puthucheary about the significance of this case and what message it sends employers for the future.

• World Bank clears the air on EPF withdrawal stance: Initially, there were reports suggesting that they were advocating for the increase of EPF withdrawal age, causing heated pushback from Malaysian senior citizens. However, since then the World Bank has clarified the misunderstanding, as they were referring to non-contributory social pensions like the Bantuan Warga Emas. We get into it.

• KL named UNESCO Creative City of Design: KL is now a member of the 400 city network which fosters international collaboration among cities that see culture and creativity as major drivers of urban development. With this recognition, we join other local cities like Ipoh and Kuching. To learn about the significance of this achievement, we hear from Keith Tan Kay Hin, Associate Professor from the School of Architecture, Building & Design at Taylor’s University.

• Bukit Bintang to be showered with lights: The Housing and Local Government Ministry is looking to make Bukit Bintang a premier nighttime tourist destination ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026. The 'I Lite U' initiative will see a major archway and 51 other light displays installed along the 1km street. We discuss whether this will be an appealing tourist attraction.
