Top 5 at 5: Residents of Kampung Papan Left With No Answers

Demolition is set to proceed in Kampung Papan despite a court injunction and decades of residence dating back to 1939. Residents were once promised affordable terrace houses, then replacement apartments, but neither offer came with official documents confirming cost, timeline, or land titles. S. Arutchelvan, Deputy Chairperson of Parti Sosialis Malaysia joins us to talk about what residents are facing.

Other stories we covered:

• Muhyiddin son-in-law in Middle East: Datuk Seri Muhammad Adlan Berhan, wanted by MACC over a RM50 million breach of trust, is believed to be moving between the Middle East and Thailand, despite a two-year manhunt and international alerts. With investigations complete and charges imminent, questions loom on elite evasion and how weak extradition frameworks undermine Malaysia’s fight against corruption. Pushpan Murugiah, the CEO of Center to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4) weighs in.

• Insuring cars against natural disasters: Most Malaysian car owners aren’t aware that natural disasters—like falling trees, floods, or landslides, aren’t covered under basic insurance plans. Without a “special perils” add-on, parked vehicles damaged by storms may not qualify for compensation. As extreme weather becomes more frequent, calls for clearer policies are rising. We speak to Dr Saravanan Thambirajah, CEO of the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (FOMCA).

• Exams in school debate continue: Minister of Education Fadhlina Sidek said the lack of UPSR and PT3 have not affected students' progress. Critics remain skeptical. We get into it with Nina Adlan Disney, managing director of Leap-Ed Services.

• Melaka spotlights kebaya: Starting next year, visitors dressed in traditional nyonya kebaya will enjoy free entry to top Melaka attractions, a move aimed at celebrating Peranakan and Chetti heritage while boosting cultural tourism. We get into it.
