Top 5 at 5: Strengthening Disability Rights in Court

A landmark court ruling has strengthened disability rights, particularly in fair employment after Ch’ng Bao-Zhong won a case against the Public Services Commission (SPA) and the Malaysian government at the Penang High Court. We speak to lawyer Surendra Ananth and Anit Kaur Randhawa, co-chair of the Bar Council Ad Hoc Committee on Persons with Disabilities, for their insights.

Other stories we covered:

· Singaporean student group protests ties to Israel: A student-led protest at the National University of Singapore demanded local universities to divest from all investments and partnerships with Israel companies. A representative from Students for Palestine Singapore shares the response to their demonstration.

· AI deepfakes targetting women: In the US, UK and around the world, female politicians have been victims to non-consensual AI-generated explicit content, prompting calls for tighter regulations. We reached out to Zaireeni Azmi, a researcher from the Centre for Research on Women at Universiti Sains Malaysia for her insights.

· Making deadlines for p-hailing fairer: Expectations of short turnovers are causing p-hailing drivers to break road rules to complete orders. We unpack the calls to provide safety training to p-hailing and e-hailing drivers and how the system could be changed to benefit all parties.

· A tribute to Malaysian playwright, Jit Murad: Organised by DramaLab, Jitfest is an event dedicated to the legacy of the late Jit Murad work that was a part of expanding the Malaysian theatre space. Jo Kukathas, artistic director of the Instant Cafe Theatre Company and theater performer Chacko Vadaketh, who are dear friends of Jit, share their hopes for Jitfest.
