Top 5 at 5: What's At Stake in the Kampung Sungai Baru Land Dispute?

A long-standing land dispute in Kampung Sungai Baru escalated yesterday when a scuffle broke out during a court-ordered eviction, leaving the Dang Wangi police chief injured. What does this escalation reveal about where the conflict stands, and what residents are still fighting for? We get into it with N. Surendran.

Other stories we covered:

• Are e-wallets putting children at risk?: Schoolchildren are reportedly selling explicit photos via WhatsApp, raising alarm over how easily minors can access e-wallets to receive payments. We hear from Gokula Krishnan Subramaniam, Founder and CEO of Vircle about regulatory loopholes. We also speak to Ong Johnson, who specialises in Technology, Media, and Telecommunications law about what can be done.

• Our broken adoption pathways: A paedophile ring in Malaysia has reportedly exploited the JPN adoption route to gain custody of infants, prompting calls for urgent reform. Child rights activist Hartini Zainudin is urging authorities to scrap this administrative pathway, citing its lack of judicial oversight and vulnerability to abuse. Hartini herself joins us to talk about this issue.

• Low pet adoption rates in Malaysia: Despite global surges in pet adoption, Malaysia’s rates remain stagnant, with only 10% of SPCA Selangor’s rescued animals finding homes annually. Rising pet care costs and a preference for purebred animals continue to hinder adoption campaigns. SPCA’s Kelvin Cheah shares these realities with us, and why adopting pets instead of shopping them, are beneficial.

• Albania's AI Cabinet Minister: Albania has named Diella, an AI-powered figure, as its new Cabinet Minister for procurement in a bold move to combat corruption and boost transparency. With public tenders long mired in scandal, Prime Minister Edi Rama hopes Diella will help pave the way toward EU membership, but critics question the bot’s accountability and safeguards.
