Beginning 1st January this year, the Selangor government has fully implemented its ‘No-Plastic’ campaign to 7 days a week. This new policy means that the current 20 sen charge to buy a plastic bag is now effective every day. This is done with hope that consumers will be able to implement good habits when they go out shopping or buy food.
However, some parties have critiqued the effectiveness of the move, saying that Selangor's "No Plastic" campaign will not achieve its objectives if the state government still allowed the sale of plastic bags to shoppers.
We sit down with YB Elizabeth Wong, Selangor’s Green Tech and Environment Committee Chairman to chat about these issues, from how it's affecting both consumers and businesses alike and if this will really change habits.
This is a report by Aisyah Tajuddin.
