Dato’ Sri Anwar Ibrahim’s government announced further progress towards abolishing the mandatory death penalty. Minister of Law and Institutional Reform Datuk Seri Azalina Othman said that the government would table a series of bills related to amending the law in the coming February parliamentary sitting. What is the significance of abolishing the mandatory death penalty and what kind of implications will this have for the legal system? For insights we speak to Goh Cia Yee, a criminal lawyer.
