Malaysia Ill-Equipped To Deal With Sex Offenders

There's been a lot of discussion in the Malaysian media about how society should deal with sex offenders who have served their prison sentences. This after convicted serial rapist Selva Kumar Suppiah was deported from Canada to Malaysia.

This case has exposed the lack of preparedness on the part of our enforcement authorities and the gaps in our legislation to this issue.

How are Malaysian laws going to handle former convicts like him? How should the police put him under closer surveillance? Or should he be left alone and his personal freedom respected? And is a sex offender registry the best way to deal with this issue?

Erin Sweeny is an Australian psychologist who was recognised with a 100 Women award by the BBC last year for her work in treating sex offenders. She shares her experiences and insights on the matter.
