The Merdeka Announcement

After the successful negotiation for our independence in London, the late Tunku Abdul Rahman and his entourage headed to Melaka, the place where it all began for the country, to announce the good news. It was a symbolic move to kickstart our preparation to truly be an independent nation, 1957 onwards. In this special Merdeka episode, we chronicle what went down on the 20th of February 1956 at the Padang Bandar Hilir in Melaka, as well as explore the little known Merdeka Obelisk that was built on that site, to commemorate the event.
