Remember Freedom, Love and Merdeka

The word Merdeka has its roots in Sanskrit meaning "rich, prosperous and powerful". However, ever since countries like Indonesia have used it as a cry for freedom against colonialism, it has acquired the new meaning of "liberation". What does Merdeka mean to those of us in the 21st Century and can we still cling on to a post-Tunku understanding of the word? We speak to the country's nation builders and get behind the language of freedom.

This report was produced by Aziff Azuddin, Sharyl Kaur, and Muhammad Haniff Baharudin.
