S1E01 - What is Malaysian Cinema?

Unpacking Malaysian Cinema is an 8-part series that discusses relevant issues facing Malaysian film industry as told by filmmakers drawing on archival recordings and new interviews.

To begin the series, our inaugural episode asks the question - what is Malaysian cinema?

Film carries the burden of reflecting the nation and its culture, but what is Malaysia and how can it be defined in cinema? In light of the long history of Malaysian cinema from P Ramlee until today and the recent debates over language issue, we spoke to Malaysian filmmakers about the meaning of Malaysian cinema to them.
