Morning Brief
In April last year, the US Congress passed a law that would ban TikTok by 19 January this year unless it divests from its Chinese parent, Bytedance. TikTok’s lawyers contended that a ban would violate freedom of speech rights, but failed to sway a federal appeals court in December. Last Friday, the US Supreme Court heard oral arguments from TikTok’s lawyers on the matter, and the Court is projected to make its decision soon. Will this ban-or-sale law be upheld, and if so, how will this move affect TikTok and the larger media landscape? For some thoughts, we speak to Bradley Freeman, Professor of Creative Arts & Media, School of Arts, Sunway University.
