In Jail with Nelson Mandela

The late Nelson Mandela is the most prominent name linked to the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa. But there were numerous leaders fighting in other ways to free black South Africans from racial segregation and oppression. Dr Saths Cooper, a clinical psychologist and President of the International Union of Psychological Science, was one of the figures behind the scenes. He spent nine years in jail for his political activism, five of which were on Robben Island in the same cell block as Mandela. We speak to him about growing up in Durban, the psychology of apartheid rule and South African politics today.
