Last January, the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development proposed to abolish the caning of minors in court, prompting many quarters among the Malaysian public to ask whether the act of caning itself would eventually be criminalized. Discussing all aspects of corporal punishment as it relates to children and the Child Act is consultant paediatrician Dr. Amar-Singh HSS, president of the National Early Childhood Intervention Council (NECIC).
