Top 5 at 5: Femicide on the Rise in Malaysia

Following a string of murder cases involving women, we speak to Tamyra Selvarajan, advocacy officer at Women’s Aid Organisation about the prevalence of gender-based violence in the country, and why authorities should track femicide as a separate category of crime.

Other stories we covered:

• Ukraine's security up in the air: After Trump backtracked on his initial promise to provide ground troops in Ukraine, European nations are expected to pull their weight to backup Zelenskyy. We get some insight on the situation from Benjamin Barton, Head of the School of Politics and International Relations at the University of Nottingham Malaysia.
• RON95 subsidies to be refined: According to the Finance Ministry, eligibility will be determined based on data sources from income records and household income surveys. We ask economist Doris Liew if this will effectively provide targeted assistance.
• 100,000 foreign workers untraceable: Migrant construction workers who go through the Construction Labour Exchange Centre Berhad’s whitewashing program potentially become untraceable after the expiration of their Temporary Work Visit Passes. We hear from Foo Yen Ne, Practice Lead at Onward, and Alex Ong from Migrant Care for their thoughts on these regulation schemes.
• Racist shower gel ad banned: A UK ad for Sanex shower gel was banned for being offensive for depicting two black models struggling with dry, itchy skin but a white model as having flawless skin, implying white skin is superior. We discuss how skin colour is seen, here and elsewhere.
