Protesting Power Clashes

This week of A Bit of Culture welcomes writer Dr. Ann Lee and singer-songwriter Azmyl Yunor with our host, Kam Raslan. Our trio starts off discussing the Power Distance Index (PDI), referring to the relationship between higher-ranking individuals and lower-ranking individuals within a nation. With Malaysia recording the highest power distance of any country in the world, could this be an illustration of the country being ruled by extreme power? Kam steers the next topic to talk about the movie Black Narcissus, a classic tale of an explosive clash between the spirit and flesh, that would definitely pass off as erotic in today’s context. Lastly, Azmyl elucidates on protest music in Malaysia, in relation to the classic book Weapons of The Weak, lamenting the lack of protest musicians in a country with the world's highest PDI.
