Billboards, Bangi and Budaya Kuning

This episode of A Bit of Culture welcomes back writer Dr. Ann Lee and singer-songwriter Azmyl Yunor to the fold. The trio begins by discussing the different aspects of the Halal ecosystem, particularly in the suburban town of Bandar Baru Bangi. From products that contradict the perimeter of what’s considered “permissible” to questionable advertising plastered all over town, Bangi seems to have it all. Then, Kam brings the conversation back to the 80s, reflecting on his late discovery of the Swedish pop group ABBA and expressing that the group’s existence is more than just a contribution to pop culture. Lastly, Ann speaks on an initiative titled MY Art Memory Project by Five Arts Centre Malaysia, a digital project that aims to preserve archival documents and historically significant voices that are made accessible to the public.
